The positive earnings trend of the Salzgitter Group continued in the second quarter of the financial year 2010 in the form of a pre-tax profit. Contributing factors included the satisfactory capacity utilization situation of most product segments and the sharp increase in selling prices in steel trading operations. Particularly when compared with the crisis-ridden previous year's period, the business of the Group has clearly stabilized.

In today’s extraordinary meeting the Supervisory Board of Salzgitter AG has unanimously appointed Prof. Dr. Heinz Jörg Fuhrmann as the Chairman of the Executive Board of Salzgitter AG for the period from July 1, 2011 to June 30, 2016.

As an international trade fair for innovation, technologies and machinery, the ITM Poland in Posen, which will take place from June 8-11, 2010, ranks as the largest trade fair of its kind in Poland. With its subsidiaries Salzgitter Mannesmann Stahlhandel, Peiner Träger, Salzgitter Man-nesmann Line Pipe and Salzgitter Mannesmann Precision, the Salzgitter Group will be on loca-tion at the ITM in Hall 5, Stand 146.

In the first quarter of the financial year 2010, the ongoing economic recovery supported both the current order and capacity utilization situation as well as the further business outlook of the Salzgitter Group. The selling price trend for rolled steel and tubes products, however, failed to keep pace with the swift increase in the price of commodities. Moreover, the sale of products destined for the construction sector was hampered by the protracted wintry weather conditions. Given these generally favorable conditions, which were not without their limitations, the Group achieved an operating profit, thereby concluding the first quarter with a result much improved in comparison with a year ago.

Key data of the financial year 2009

2009 will go down as one of the most difficult financial years in the 150-year history of the Salzgitter Group. During the first nine months the Group had to absorb a dramatic slump in demand for rolled steel products, among other occurrences. Thanks, on the one hand, to the sound and broad business base and the healthy financial position of the company and, on the other, to a program of swiftly implemented immediate measures to stabilize performance, all the challenges posed by the crisis were mastered with aplomb.
