Ulrich Grethe (48, graduate of engineering) has been appointed as member of the Executive Board of Salzgitter Stahl GmbH (SZS) and chairman of the Management Board of Salzgitter Flachstahl GmbH (SZFG) as of January 1, 2010.

We regret that Hans Fischer, the Salzgitter AG Executive Board member responsible for the Steel Division, has requested the Supervisory Board to discontinue his employment contract. At an extraordinary meeting held the Supervisory Board accepted his request, and simultaneously appointed Mr Nonn as member of the Executive Board of Salzgitter AG with responsibility for the Steel Division.

Since the general economic conditions started to brighten over the course of the first half year 2009, the Salzgitter Group achieved a notable improvement in results in the third quarter.

In accordance with expectations, the Salzgitter Group was exposed to considerable pressure from the impact of the global financial and economic crisis in the first half of the financial year 2009.

In the first quarter of the financial year, the Salzgitter Group was exposed to the pressure exerted by recessionary trends, especially in the businesses of the Steel, Trading and Technology divisions.

Staged from April 20 to 24, 2009, the Hanover Fair combines a total of 13 leading international trade fairs under one roof. The key topics of this year’s fair revolve around sustainability and the efficient use of resources. Salzgitter AG and its Steel, Trading, Tubes, Services and Technologies divisions will be appearing at the Subcontracting fair in Hall 5 on Stand A14.

The 2008 Annual Report was part of a presentation made to the public at this year's Annual Results Press Conference of Salzgitter AG.

The Salzgitter Group achieved a pre-tax profit of € 1.0 billion in the financial year 2008 despite the dramatic developments in global economic conditions which unfolded at the end of the year.

The Salzgitter AG has increased its shareholding in Klöckner-Werke AG, Duisburg, of which it acquired 86 % in 2007, to more than 95 % over the year 2008.
